The Dogging ticket (CPCCLDG3001) trains you to direct crane operators when the load moves out of their line of sight, select the right lifting gear for the job, and apply proper slinging techniques to keep loads - and everyone around them - stable and safe.
Introduction:
RTEO's Dogging course runs over three days and blends theory with hands-on yard practice using real cranes, real loads, and real gear. You'll spend the bulk of your time on the tools rather than in the classroom, which is how slinging and signalling actually sticks. Class sizes are capped at 8 to make sure everyone gets adequate crane time.
What to wear and bring on the day:

Between October and March the yard gets hot — bring extra water. Between June and August, pack a waterproof jacket and a jumper, as a good portion of each day is spent outdoors regardless of weather.
Please note: learners who turn up without the required PPE will be sent home and charged a rebooking fee. We can't make exceptions on this — it's a WHS requirement for yard access.
Target Audience:
This course is designed for construction workers, riggers-in-training, crane crew, and site personnel who need a Dogging High Risk Work Licence to direct lifts on commercial, civil, or industrial projects. It's best suited to learners who already have some exposure to a construction or industrial environment, as the pace assumes comfort around heavy plant and yard operations. Career changers and new entrants are welcome, but should expect a steep learning curve and may benefit from shadowing experienced doggers before enrolling.
Learning Outcomes:
- Interpret lift plans, load charts, and Safe Work Method Statements
- Calculate load weights and identify the centre of gravity for irregular loads
- Select, inspect, and reject lifting gear including slings, shackles, chains, and hooks
- Apply correct slinging techniques for a range of load types and orientations
- Direct crane operators using standard whistle, voice, and hand signals
- Communicate effectively via two-way radio when loads are out of sight
- Identify and respond to hazards during lifting operations
- Complete pre-lift checks and post-lift equipment inspections
